A cautionary tale for our times, YA BEIRUT is a first-hand account of the extraordinary efforts of ordinary Beirutis seeking to reclaim their future in a country plunged into economic despair. This cinema verité film vividly captures life in a failed state through the daily experiences of its citizens.
The co-directors and producers of YA BEIRUT embody a balance of perspectives. Born in Beirut, Adla has both deep personal and professional roots in Lebanon, which formed the basis of her journalistic and filmmaking pursuits focused on the complexities of Middle Eastern politics. Raised in the United States, Xan knew very little about those complexities until, 20 years ago, she married into a Lebanese family who had left during the civil war in the 1970s. It was a growing understanding of the depth of the subject, and the widespread misconceptions and lack of basic awareness about Lebanon in the West. For Maya, who was also born in Beirut, the city has always been an integral part of her heritage and personal identity. She was drawn to YA BEIRUT because of its honest portrayal of the lives that are lived in the capital beyond the news headlines. For the three of us, YA BEIRUT will be a very personal story, but also one we plan to approach from a professional perspective that will allow us to present the truest picture of Beirut possible. We want to make a film that allows our audience to feel what we felt when in Beirut – the tremendous strength and vitality of the citizens there despite all the existential challenges they are facing.
